Review : Flock; The Journey Part I

Introduction :
This anthology has been compiled and edited by a talented poetess, as I know of her, Mahua Sen and published by Raindrops Company, Bangalore. I'm thankful to Mahua Sen to invite me as Guest Author for contributing my story for the same.

The book's cover : Amazing, I would say - absolutely in sync with the title of the book displaying a flock of storks flying in the sky. The color combination of the cover is fantastic and quite soothing to the eyes.

Stories :
1. Snake For Snake : Very first story written by me. And therefore I request and leave it to others to review it.
2. Candle Flames : This is written by NJ. The story tells about two characters; Emily and Syd. They live in a hilly area known as Grantchester Meadows. They are neighbors. Both love nature. Where Syd lives there permanently, Emily has been living there since three years as a journalist exploring and reporting the nature. One day she happens to visit his house in his absence and finds him a very talented painter. What stirs her heart and what she's compelled to write for him is the point interesting enough to read the story. A good job by NJ.
3.Chris : by Manaswita Ghosh. Written in the form of a journal, this story is grave enough unfolding the mental tensions of a dysfunctional family overwhelmed by domestic violence and its malicious effects on the minds of all the family members leading them to depression. And this depression leads to some nefarious designs. An eye opener. Manaswita has successfully sketched the difficult premise. 4. These Streets Are Uneven : Penned by Atima Mankotia. A heart rending story which we notice daily unfolding at the red lights of our cities, though superficially. It needs a writer to go in depth to understand the underbelly of this world and Atima has described all with pretty ease through the character of Munni. Worth reading!
5. Calo with Calo: By Galina Trefil: This is a distinct story, yet familiar in Indian contexts coming from the author - distinct because it tells us about the taboos prevailing in a different culture, and familiar because the same here in India as well, as far as love and caste are concerned. A heart touching story of innocent love blooming between Milo and Rosa, suffered at the hands of Romani Caste system - ultimately forcing them to revolt. A very nice write up by a talented writer.
6. The Proposal : Antother story from the pen of Galina Trefil. This is brilliant piece of work telling the reader how a girl Camelia and two boys Victor and Timotei respond during a communal riot when they're at receiving end. You may feel their worst fears, their feelings for each other and sympathy they have and how they comfort and reassure each other. For example : Timotei says to Camelia,"You're a born good luck charm. You'll make your husband very happy." "Good luck charm? Are you daft?" "Yes, your  Roma name is Pani. You're the reason that we're all going to survive tonight. Make no mistake about it. Water doesn't burn." Wonderful!!
7. The Runaway Girl : By Samarth S. Choudhary. This story unfolds the gradual transformation of a girl Shreya, who's lost her confidence due to her step-fathers atrocities, is timid and remains subdued and introvert, into an outrageous, bold and rebellion, ultimately getting him arrested. Interesting.
8. This Heart Never Forgets: By Manish Sharma. A short and crispy story which captures your mind and turn you to think a hundred times when a critically ill father waits his son to come to take care of him. But, to his astonishment he finds someone else. To find, read the story and I'm sure, you'll love it Excellent!

9. A Long Way Home : By Moonmoon Chowdhury. What price a girl has to pay marrying an NRI boy, settled in USA, selected by her parents - read this mind-blowing story and how she manages to fight with those unfavorable and unpredictable conditions and her husband's mechanical behavior towards her will make you sit in your bed. An example: When asked by an Indian lady whether she's married, she replies, "no". Marriage is not the ritual, it is in the everyday act of kindness and goodwill towards one's spouse. Supreb language, and a flow letting you feel a cold breeze after subjecting to hot sun are the core points of the story.
10. The Stunning Banff : Written by Shree. Among the heart touching stories, when you turn the page, you find something different - A Travelogue about The city of Banff situated among the most picturesque settings of the Canadian Rockies. The author has described almost everything about the natural beauty of this place and the places of attraction to be visited whenever you get a chance to go there. Amazing piece with all the details about Lake Louise, the sightseeing Gandola, and the National Park.
11. Illa Of Paithan: By Shriya Gupta. The story is about the age old exploitation of farmers in Godavari basin at the hands of big landlords. Illa, a girl comes from a family of cotton farmers owing big loans to the landlord Maya. It's heart warming to read how Illa gets inspired by the carvings of a mythological story on the walls of a nearby temple and turns into a rebellion. Shriya Gupta is a compelling writer and she's to go a long way with her writing skills for sure. All the best!
12. Best Of Northern Forests: By Harsh Dubey. Kind of a horror story which I couldn't get properly. It's about a boy Syn and a princess Anweiya and the aurora of the energy emanating from a red beryl. Perhaps, I could not understand this story due to my weak imaginative power. I'm looking forward for the review of this story coming from someone else. Will be grateful.
13. The Curse - A horror story: By Sonia Kundra Singh. Druv Narayan, a paranormal investigator is entrusted a job to find the truth about a haunted house and he stays there for a few days. While searching the house he stumbles upon a doll lying over there. "Yes his daughter will surly love it," he thinks and decides to gift her that soft doll. What happens next is enough to send chills to your spine. Not a fit story for people with weak heart. Keep it up Sonia ji.

Overall Ranking 4/5
